Christmas Party Fundraising

The Christmas parties for SNH in 2013 and 2014 were such a big hit and such a wonderful blessing to the children and families of SNH. So we are raising money for our 3rd annual Christmas party!

SNH anticipates close to 200 children and their care givers to attend and desire to bless each family with a Christmas meal (complete with cake)! SNH also desires to give Christmas gifts of bars of soap and mosquito nets to the children enrolled in SNH. Hence the goal is to raise $600 US for the Christmas party!

Please read the letter from our Director Sherinah to learn more:

To whom it may concern.

My name is Nakiyemba Shamim, aka Sherinah. I work at Nakaseke based charity called Sherinah's New Hope for Children with Disability Ministry (SNH) that provides children with special needs the opportunity to have access to education, health care, and all form of social services through child sponsorship and general donation from concerned people around the world. Most of those children come from low income families therefore it's a passion to help the celebrated Christmas in special way...last year's fundraising for Christmas was tremendously successful we raised funds and we were able to feed over 100 children and their care givers. This year we expect to feed more children due to the fact, we enrolled a number of new children who don't have a sponsor yet to date.

We have embarked on on fundraising campaign to help us us raise enough funds to be able to help more than double the number of kids last year. We would be delighted if you can help SNH to achieve its goals by donating a monetary donation. This year our goal is to raise $600 in which the 550 will go towards Christmas party and this will include Christmas meal, Christmas cake, 2 bars of soap for each of enrolled child, a mosquito net, plus $5 cash to each of enrolled child...the $50 will go towards the construction of the community church and a center where our children gather for our center days.

We are well aware that it may some time be difficult to convince people to donate especially when Christmas is close, but be aware that there there are many others who find themselves in worse predicaments. SNH will be happy to accept any form of help.

Please consider to helping SNH kids to enjoy the coming Christmas.

Thanks to you, we managed to take 5 deaf children each with the care giver plus 4(four) staff members prior to an interpreter.
Your donation helped us to participate, have meals for 3 days, purchase of t.shirts as weekly uniform accommodation plus transport to and from.

Update on IDAW

International Deaf Awareness Week

Since SNH is a registered NGO in Uganda, SNH has been invited by the Uganda National Association of the Deaf to participate in the International Deaf Awareness Week (IDAW) from October 26 to October 30! (The banner has incorrect dates due to overlap with local elections, but it will take you to the UNAD Facebook page.)

The IDAW was started by the World Federation of the Deaf and this is Sherinah's description of the week's activities: "Various activities are done to ensure that deaf rights are being recognized by the society. During the some period, we use this opportunity to advocate for equal treatment,we do community cleaning, various deaf people express their talents,there is cultural shows by deaf people themselves, blood donation and HIV/AIDS testing, football and netball friendly match and many other interesting activities are done."

The UNAD invited 4 deaf children and they will need to travel with 2 SNH staff members and 2 parents. The cost for these 8 people is 350$ US and covers accommodation, transportation, meals and t-shirts.

Sherinah wrote the following message to share more information about the experience:

To friends of Sherinahs New Hope for Children with Disability Ministry,

We all know fundraising could be hard thing, but its worth a try! I am grateful to all friends I have. Thank you so much for important influence towards my work in the past. The previous fundraising were successful including last years Christmas party. Thank you everybody who contributed, now am inviting you to help again!

This time we are looking for donations from friends,sponsors and well wishers to contribute towards the International Deaf Awareness week (IDAW) scheduled on 26th-30th October 2015.

You may be asking what is International Deaf Awareness Week?? Well, it's about 'promoting the positive aspects of deafness,' to 'promote social inclusion' and raise awareness to all the organisations that support the week, and most importantly, it's about helping people who are deaf themselves.

This year's IDAW Theme Is "With Sign Language Rights Our Children."

Sherinah's New Hope for Children with Disabilities Ministry is one of registered NGO in Uganda under the Ministry of Local Government aiming at advocating for children with disability rights including the deaf (children with hearing impairments, promote social inclusion through advocacy and lobbying, etc. Therefore we found it necessary for us to participate in this important event, but then without financial assistance from people like you, we will not be able to participate.

We need 350$ US to enable us participate in this important event. We are looking for 35 people each to contribute 10$ towards this causes within the period of 3 weeks. From now until 25th October 2015.

Piglets!

We had shared in August that thanks to a generous donor, SNH was able to buy a printer (you can read that post here). Well, now we have some more exciting news to share! The printer was just a small purchase from the donation to SNH--the main bulk of the donation went to buy 27 piglets and to construct a piglet house! This means that SNH is now starting to generate our own income to help fund the ministry!

We hope you enjoy seeing the photos of this SNH investment! We are so excited to see how these piglets will be able to serve the SNH kids!

Lake Mburo National Park

This week I want to share about the Lake Mburo National Park!

The Lake Mburo National Park is 20% wetland. The park used to have lots of grasslands, but now there are no elephants present in the park and so the forested areas are not trampled down by elephants.

Although the park is not home to elephants, there are many other animals such as zebra, impala, eland, buffalo, oribi, Defassa waterbuck, leopard, hippo, hyena, topi and reedbuck. In case you are wondering what some of these animals look like, here is an eland:

Recipes from Uganda: Peanut Soup

We have never tried peanut soup, but since my kids both love the taste of peanuts, I want to try out this Ugandan dish! Have you ever tried Peanut Soup?

Ingredients:
3 tbsp peanut oil
2 onions, peeled and chopped
2 celery sticks, washed and chopped
2 red bell peppers, deseeded and cubed
1 tbsp curry powder
3 c water
2 tomatoes, cubed
1 hot chili, finely chopped
Salt, to taste
4½ oz peanut butter
Juice of 1 lime

Directions:
Heat the oil in a skillet. Add the onions and celery and sauté gently for 10 minutes over medium heat.
Stir in the bell peppers and chilli and sauté 5 minutes more.
Sprinkle the curry powder over the top then add the water and tomatoes.
Season to taste with salt, bring to a boil then cover the pan and cook over low heat for 40 minutes.
Whisk together the peanut butter and lime juice until smooth, and then beat mixture into the soup.
Stir to combine and serve immediately.
